The Loop at Forest Dunes

Roscommon, Michigan

On September 1st, 2015, the last seed hit the ground on our new, reversible 18-hole design for Forest Dunes Resort in northern Michigan.  Clearing had been done in the winter of 2013-14, but shaping did not begin in earnest until late August of 2014, with six holes shaped and the irrigation main installed before winter struck, a good enough head start to finish the construction of the course in the short Michigan summer this past year.

The Loop is two courses in one.  On even-numbered days, it will be played clockwise, but every other day the course will play backwards down the 18th fairway to the 17th green, and all the way around until the last hole plays back up the first fairway to the 18th green.  It's a concept Tom Doak has doodled around with for nearly 20 years, and a dream come true to put it into practice.

The goal of the project was to make Forest Dunes a destination in its own right, so that visitors will want to stay there for multiple days instead of just stopping through as part of a multi-stop trip across northern Michigan.  Adding two courses for the price of one accomplishes this and more; we hope that golfers will not only stay to play both versions of the new course, but that the two loops are so different that people will want to try again to sort out how they coexist.
